Advice from Payal

What is your advice to teenagers about fashion?

Growing up in a developing country meant shopping for clothes only for an occasion such as a festival. Shopping was never a recreation or a pastime. Hence, the needs and the wants were clearly imbibed in my system. The best thing to do is not follow a fad just because it's in! Learn to know your body and create your own style, which is timeless. Complete the outfit and finish your look with other existing clothing items.

Learn to recycle your clothing by piecing and matching clothes together. Learn to maximize what you have. For example, use a brooch or a pin on your jeans or bosom or throw a scarf around your neck to update an old ensemble.

What would you like to say to teenagers whose body type is not the thin portrayal these magazines include?

This is a sensitive age, you want to look like someone else and be a diva star. However, follow your own statement of style and people will follow you. Remember, people will remember your style not your body size. It's how you carry things. Make the best with what you have and stay healthy.

Do you have any fashion tips for teens on a budget?

Use accessories to create completely new outfits. Take a colorful scarf or a piece of vintage jewelry to update your look and create your own style. You can find these scarves in your grandmother or mother's closet. You can also visit consignment shops for scarves and other accessories. They can immediately transform you into a savvy girl. Create your own sense of style and stick with it for a while. Remember, recycle if you can, mix and match with new stuff and old.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Be original - create your style and let people follow you.
